“Company culture” is a term that’s getting a lot of airtime these days. Whether positive or negative, every company has a culture. To ensure happiness and a sense of fulfillment, it’s critical for employees to seek-out and work for companies that share their values. Every company defines its culture, whether explicitly through vision and mission statements or implicitly through employee dynamics and interactions.
At McDermott & Bull, we strive to create a positive culture that is not only results-driven but also collaborative and fun! After two seasons of softball and one season of kickball in 2016, it’s safe to say that our cleverly named team “Executive Search & Destroy” is an action-oriented group. From annual traditions like our Volunteer Day and Ski Trip, to monthly opportunities like our Company Lunches and Fab Fitness First Fridays, our firm knows how to work together, play together, and serve together. Most of us spend a large chunk of our time at work, so why not make it as enjoyable and meaningful as possible for everyone?
Of course, it takes much more than cool perks to retain valuable employees. Our firm’s senior management has come to understand that work-life balance is important and contributes to job satisfaction; therefore, Free Fridays (where each employee gets the privilege of taking one Friday off each month) have been implemented for the past three years at McDermott & Bull. Our office also shuts down at approximately 2pm every Friday – this allows our team to ease into the weekend after pushing hard all week.
Our recent office renovation has promoted a more inclusive (we got rid of high cubicle walls!) and healthy (adjustable standing desks!) work environment. One new feature of this renovation is The Dream Wall (pictured below), which allows anyone to share their life goals via sticky notes. Statistics show that people who write down their goals have an 80% higher chance of achieving them, and people who tell others about their goals have an even greater chance of achieving them. Check out this Forbes article on “Why You Should Be Writing Down Your Goals.” At the reveal of The Dream Wall, Rod McDermott, Managing Partner of McDermott & Bull, shared the following with us: “Our goal should be to have our careers at M&B help us achieve the lives we want. Why not?” At our most recent monthly Town Hall Meeting, we even formed committees for new culture initiatives to help hold each other accountable. To me, the culture at McDermott & Bull is a culture of achieving dreams, both professional and personal.
