McDermott + Bull has successfully placed Darren Blackburn as Dean, School of Public Safety at the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC). In this role, Darren will lead the school’s strategic vision and operations, overseeing curriculum development, educational governance, financial performance, and key partnerships across emergency management and fire safety programming. He will play a pivotal role in shaping JIBC’s evolving identity and ensuring alignment with provincial priorities and community needs.
Darren brings over 17 years of progressive leadership experience at JIBC, most recently serving as Program Director within the Emergency Management Division. His deep understanding of the Institute’s academic governance, budgeting processes, contract training, and student-focused programming makes him exceptionally well-suited for the role. Darren is also a respected researcher and educator in the public safety field, currently completing his PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of British Columbia. He holds a Master of Arts from Athabasca University and a Bachelor of Arts from Trent University.
