The PROBLEM

The PE sponsor combined two companies lacking in HR processes, policies, structure, and practices. They needed an interim HR Leader to develop a roadmap for the HR department and build the function from the ground up. This individual would need to professionalize payroll practices, developing policies around overtime pay, pay codes, rules, and standards. They would also need to establish organizational structure, job descriptions, compensation and benefits practices, and performance reviews.

The Solution

McDermott + Bull Interim Leaders deployed an experienced HR leader with a broad background across all facets of HR. They had previously led the HR function for a PE rollup with over 40 acquisitions, where they built an integrated HR team to drive company scale. With over 16 years of hands-on HR experience, including building HR functions, processes, and policies from the ground up, the interim was well-equipped to handle the company’s needs.

The RESULT

The interim leader laid substantial groundwork to facilitate the merger of the two companies. They developed essential HR components such as an updated compensation plan, an employee handbook, job descriptions, a performance management process, and communication strategies to support the merger process. They also addressed salary discrepancies to ensure alignment with the new structure.

Overtime Pay and Travel Time Policies

Created guidelines for overtime pay for daily rate employees and established a travel time guidance policy, ensuring fair and consistent practices.

Organizational Structure and Responsibilities

Developed a HR organizational chart and outlined team responsibilities, laying the groundwork for effective organizational alignment post-merger.

Background Checks and Benefits Optimization

Revamped the background check process and conducted a benefits survey to optimize employee benefits, making necessary adjustments per the results.
