McDermott + Bull has been engaged to lead the search Vancouver Island University’s new Dean, Faculties of Education, and Academic and Career Preparation. This search will be led by McDermott + Bull Principal Alex Verdecchia and Executive Search Consultant Corey Paquette.

Vancouver Island University is located in one of the most beautiful places in the world, within the traditional territories of the Coast Salish Peoples along the rugged coastline of the Salish Sea. Vancouver Island University (VIU) plays a vital role in the educational, cultural, and economic life of the area. With its main campus in Nanaimo and regional campuses in Duncan, Powell River, and Parksville, VIU enriches its growing student body and faculty by connecting coastal beauty and a culture of community with high-quality education.

VIU is implementing a series of changes to strategically align resources, enhance flexibility, and improve accessibility for all learners. These changes will build on VIU’s vision of building responsive, regionally relevant, high-quality programs. The first change, as evidenced by this role, is bringing together the Faculty of Academic and Career Preparation (ACP) and the Faculty of Education under one Dean.

Reporting to the Provost and Vice-President Academic, the Dean, Faculties of Education, and Academic and Career Preparation provides strategic and innovative leadership as its chief academic and administrative officer. A key mandate for the incoming dean will be to explore the future administrative structure(s) of these faculties.

As the ideal candidate, you bring an internationally recognized track record as an educator and researcher, with 3 to 5 years of experience in an academic leadership role such as department chair, associate dean, dean and/or equivalent experience in the post-secondary sector. You are a visionary leader, with significant change management experience.
